After review, CRTC cancels its 2019 decision

In an unprecedented turn of events, the CRTC overturns its own 2019 ruling on wholesale internet pricing - May 27, 2021

OAKVILLE - May 27, 2021: In a move that will surely force independent ISP's to increase their prices, the CRTC has completed reviewing and elected to rescind its 2019 decision to lower wholesale Internet rates as it determined there were errors made when calculating the proposed aggregated wholesale HSA service rates.

However instead of correcting rates as part of their revision which in their opinion would cause further market uncertainties as the corrected rates would be significantly higher, the CRTC decided to simply cancel its 2019 decision and keep current wholesale rates as is.

As with all other independent ISP's, SkyChoice is shocked and dismayed at today's CRTC decision which will hurt telecom competition in Canada and lead Canadian consumers to pay even more for Internet service.

"Given increased reliance of Internet for working and learning from home during these unprecedented times, it's morally unjust that the CRTC has done such a thing" said Serge Cormier, SkyChoice CEO.

The CRTC's decision to reverse their 2019 decision was made even after the CRTC's own previous chair Jean-Pierre Blais stated back in 2016 that it was “very disturbing” that the Canadian telecom giants “did not respect accepted costing principles and methodologies” when proposing their rates, and that Canadians’ access to a choice of broadband services was at stake.

As his 5 year term expired in 2017, Mr. Blais got replaced by Ian Scott, the former VP of federal government relations at TELUS. His appointment as CRTC chair drew concerns from many people and telecom industry organizations including consumer advocacy group OpenMedia.ca.

Upload speed increase for all WiFibe services

Up to 100% upload speed upgrade for all WiFibe service plans facilitates working and learning from home - Mar 15, 2021

OAKVILLE - March 15, 2021: In order to facilitate working from home and provide even more value during these challenging times, SkyChoice is proud to announce that it has now increased the upload speed for all of its WiFibe wireless fiber Internet services at no extra cost.

"Ever since the pandemic hit us, we have seen an expotential increase of people using videoconferencing to work and learn from home. However, in most cases with videoconferencing, upload is generally more important than download speed" said Serge Cormier, SkyChoice CEO.

Effective immediately, the new upload speeds for each WiFibe plan are as follows:
- WiFibe Lite 10: Upload speed increase from 1 to 2 Mbps
- WiFibe Express 16: Upload speed increase from 1.5 to 3 Mbps
- WiFibe Ultimate 27: Upload speed increase from 5 to 6 Mbps
- WiFibe Ultra 55: Upload speed increase from 10 to 11 Mbps

As SkyChoice continues to enhance its WiFibe wireless fiber network with new technologies and additional capacity, the bandwidth offered on each plan also gets increased on a regular basis.

Supreme Court refuses CRTC's decision appeal

The Supreme Court of Canada won't be hearing big telecom's appeal of the CRTC's 2019 decision - Feb 10, 2021

OAKVILLE - February 25, 2021: The hopes of Canada's big telecom providers for not having to comply with 2019's CRTC ruling may have come to an end today as the Supreme Court of Canada has decided to not even hear their appeal.

SkyChoice is hopeful that as there are no further appeal options higher than the Supreme Court of Canada, their refusal to hear this appeal will result in large telecom providers to finally lower their wholesale rates as directed by the CRTC.

However given big telecom's vast efforts to delay implementation of the CRTC's 2019 decision, it may take a bit more time before the lower rates finally come into effect.

As previously mentionned, the CRTC is still in the process of reviewing its 2019 decision which should be completed within the next few months and once completed, the proposed or revised lower wholesale rates should finally get implemented.
